An Open & Affirming, Peace with Justice Congregation

Book Group

We have a lively book discussion group with about a dozen members who have been meeting monthly at one another’s homes for over a year now. The members nominate and vote on titles to be read. We choose books that have appeared in paperback and are available in libraries to keep expenses down.

There has been great variety in the selections. We’ve read novels about Afghanistan, China, life in the circus, and friendship; and non-fiction about sustainable living; a mountain climber who is building schools for girls in remote regions of Pakistan, and a dying man’s last words for his students and his family.. Among the books we have enjoyed are Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson; Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, by Lisa See; Crossing To Safety, by Wallace Stegner; The Storyteller’s Daughter, by Saira Shah; and The Last Lecture, by Randy Pausch. At one of our meetings we enjoyed a potluck dinner and a talk by Eric Bascom, the author of In Unbroken Line.

We welcome new members! You needn’t be a church member. If you are interested, email pastor@sanborntonucc.org

Prayer Shawl Ministry

The Prayer Shawl Ministry at the Sanbornton Congregational Church, UCC was established in January, 2008.

We are a diverse group of knitters with skills ranging from beginner to advanced.  We have bonded with each other by sharing our stories and we have produced crocheted, knitted and woven shawls.

Our shawls have been given to those who are ill, grieving, or are in need of comfort in some way.  We have celebrated happy occasions by presenting shawls to graduates.  Pocket Squares, which are smaller versions of a shawl, have been given to our troops and to those who are traveling.

As stated by Linda Skolnik and Janice MacDaniels, co-authors of ‘The Knitting Way - “knitting is not just something to do, it is a place you can go."  The mind needs a safe and secure place for thoughts and dreams – a place of resting that settles the spirit and refreshes the brain”.

You can learn more about Prayer Shawl Ministry by clicking on  www.shawlministry.com.

Our meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Woodside Craft Room,Taylor Community, Laconia, NH.  This ministry is open to the public.  Please join us!  Call 524-6251.

“You created every part of me,

knitting me in my

Mother’s womb.

For such handiwork,

I praise you. Awesome this

great wonder!”
